VENT-FREE GAS LOG FIREPLACE HEATERS
All CHILLBUSTER® sets are certified to two standards:
ANSI Z21.11.2 (Unvented Room Heaters) and ANSI Z21.60 (Vented Decorative Appliance).
For use in indoor wood-burning fireplaces or approved vent-free firebox enclosures.
They may be used with the damper open, closed or anyplace in between.
Vent-Free sets are supplemental zone heaters -
They are not intended for continuous use or whole house heating.
Glass doors must be wide open when burning for proper ventilation, proper combustion and cooling of safety controls. With adequate combustion and ventilation air, the damper may be closed for vent-free use. The damper may be opened slightly for reduced venting.
Check local codes and ordinances for permitted uses.
Vent-free sets are the only safe alternative for burning in a vented fireplace
with smoking/spillage issues.
A complete certified set consists of Chillbuster Logs and Chillbuster Hearth Kit.
DO NOT MIX LOGS AND HEARTH KITS FROM DIFFERENT SETS, CATEGORIES, OR FROM DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS. Doing so could result in unsafe operation.
CHILLBUSTER® LOGS include: Specially designed logs for use exclusively on CHILLBUSTER Hearth Kits.
Logs have holes and pins that properly locate the logs in order to promote proper burner performance.
CHILLBUSTER® HEARTH KITS include: Assembled burner/grate/safety control, Oxygen Depletion Sensor
(ODS) pilot, connector and fitting, volcanic ash, embers (C8, C5, C7, DFC7, and C2 only), damper clamp.
M - Basic Manual Control - turn the valve knob to light the main burner and adjust the flame height. Is not upgradable to remote control.
RE - Variable Flame Height Remote "EASY" Control - Light the burner and control the flame height with the hand-held wireless remote control (included).
M & RE controls have standing pilots that consume 300 BTU/hour (1 therm of natural gas every
13.9 days, or 1 gallon of propane every 12.7 days).
S Millivolt Controls have a standing pilot that consumes 575 BTU/hour (1 therm of natural gas every 7.2 days, or 1 gallon of propane every 6.6 days). They have an installed switch for ON/OFF control and may be also used with the SR-MV1, THR-MV1, WS-MV1, and WT-MV1 remote controls, or with a wired wall switch, wired wall timer, or a home automation system. See Page 46.
EI controls are pilot-on-demand systems – there is no gas being consumed while the unit is OFF. They include the hand-held remote control transmitter, with which the unit is turned ON, OFF, and the flame height adjusted.
Powered by 4 - AA batteries (included).
Please Note: The #1 Service Call for Vent-Free sets (for all manufacturers) is the result of clogged
ODS pilot air intakes. This is not a warranty issue, but is easily corrected.
Symptom: Either the pilot is hard to light or, after a period of burning, the unit shuts down.
Cause: ODS pilot air intake holes are located at the rear of the pilot assembly near where the pilot gas line
attaches to the pilot. They draw in air to mix with the gas for a proper pilot flame. Over time lint and
dust can be drawn into the holes with the air, resulting in an improper gas/air mix and a poor pilot
flame that results in nuisance pilot outage.
Fix: Clean out the ODS pilot air intake holes with a pipe cleaner or compressed air. In most cases, no parts
replacement is needed. This procedure should be accomplished seasonally, or as needed.
